If you are a female who drinks seven or more drinks a week
or if you drink more than three drinks in one setting, this
could be a sign of an alcohol problem.
While most of us may view this as casual or social drinking,
having more than one drink or two at a party or social
gathering or having to drink each and every day of the week is
indeed cause for concern.
If you or the person you are concerned about are drinking in
settings or at times that are inappropriate, this could be
seen as a sign of alcohol addiction.
Alcoholics are recognized by their denial to realize or
admit that they have a problem. So you will have to be
clever in your attempt to recognize alcoholism
in your friend or family member.
Understanding the warning signs and symptoms of alcoholism
in women (or men) can be helpful in dealing with
the 'drinking problem' and countering it. Serious chronic
alcoholism can be helped, if the warning signs are detected,
promptly.
Alcohol dependence can develop over the years and follows a
generally predictable pattern. A tolerance of alcohol develops
first, which means a person needs to consume
greater amounts of alcohol before the same effect or
feelings are noticed.
Over time, the person may lose control over their drinking
and may not be able to stop even if or when they want to. And
if alcohol consumption is reduced or stopped, withdrawal
symptoms can be experienced which can range from annoying to
life-threatening.
Drinking alone is considered to be the first and foremost
warning sign. Alcoholics drink alone to hide their problems,
plus they tend to consume more, while drinking alone.
People who have a drink problem will make an excuses
for drinking. Chronic alcoholism makes a person want to
drink and they need to drink irrespective of the
occasion.
This need to drink is another warning sign that is very
obvious.
Another warning sign is the ‘inability' to control the
alcohol intake. Alcoholics will become extremely dependent on
the alcohol that they will be controlled by it.
Some will develop the tendency to talk incessantly on the
topic in public and some will hide their drinking problem
completely from others.
Another sign among the warning signs of alcoholism is the
display of violent behavior in private or public.
Some alcoholics will become violent, they can transform into
irrational and violent people. Violent behavior that
accompanies drinking can be a very serious problem that has to
be countered early.
These violent episodes will cost them their reputation,
pride, goodwill, friends and family.
Another sign is drinking secretively. A few people will
drink privately and secretly, without the knowledge
of family or friends.
Mental instability can be a result of drinking a lot.
Depression is a common problem
that results from 'alcoholism'.

Anxiety and antisocial behavior are also common traits that
are observed in alcoholics. Lack of focus is also another sign
of alcoholism.
Alcoholics face many problems pertaining to difficulties
related to concentration, effective communication and focus.
They become ignorant of many issues and are inept to deal with
those issues, due to their lack of focus.
